Anyone who thinks Lebron or even new unproven players like a Jalen Green couldn't play in earlier eras is ludicrous. I know that soccer balls from the 50's are completely different to modern soccer balls. You could not play modern soccer with a ball from the 50's. Simply said, just not precise in any way and no reaction to spin. If that was any similar with basketballs, then it explains everything in old clips: - the awkward dribbling: ofc, when the ball bounces different directions every time it hits the floor - the odd shooting techniques: looks like optimized for least deformation. A quick release woulld be the opposite. They might not even have known that these were the physical reasons behind their techniques. Just that they worked best. I know that was generally the concept in many ball sports at the time: long straight movements, when attempting to score instead of round, short ones, really more tossing than throwing, the hand even flat behind the ball and avoiding grip on it.

In my opinion, this is a typical read and react type of offense but these are still set plays. There isn't only one way to finish them, cause defense determines what decision must be made.

I’m no NBA historian by any stretch but that team was probably the best of that decade and I’m saying that as a Laker fan who cheered on their 71-72 team to a 69-13 record, a 33-game win streak and a title that season. Walton was unbelievable in those playoffs. That team had it all and was totally unselfish.

Yes, some were plumbers & fireman, & painters and cab drivers. There was no players association yet. - so they had to find work. Many people who use that term, don’t understand economics or the game that well - & are disrespectful to those other disciplines. (Who in some instances are better at their jobs, but are not glorified.) For example, Dave Cowens drove a Cab - and was ROY/ MVP & NBA champion, when A a guys like Kareem were in the league @ Wilt at the very end of his career.

I find it interesting that the rule clarifications in 1982 regarding illegal defense ended up creating the stagnant one-on-one game that characterized late 90s and early 00s, surely the league did not have this in mind when they created the clarifications. Arguably this was a more important rule change than the 3-point shot--it was only after the zone defenses were brought back in 2001 that the 3-point shot could emerge as a real weapon.

U said it yourself. The reason ball handling appeared to be inferior is because those players werent ALLOWED to carry the ball. Today, these guys, literally, carry/palm the ball EVERY SINGLE TIME they dribble. Is unwatchable imo

The three point shot has ruined the game

Cherry picking games from each decade and trying to make them indicative of that entire decade makes for a very skewed look at history. I can easily take a single game from each decade and refute every point made here. Bottom line, a larger pool of games from each decade would have made for a more realistic look at the history of the development of the game.

There's a few things no.1 1950-1962 average player from point guards to power forward was 5'7 to 6'1 so not much spacing. Bill Russell flooded the paint and that called for outside spacing the pick and roll 3 man rotation for a better shot or the feed inside to Russell it wasnt till wilt Chamberlain in same height as bull was the feed and seed offense used and spaced big men we saw this with penny hardaway and shaq in 95.just cut on nba jams. The average guard in the 80s was now 6'1 and considered the small guy I know I played second guard at 6'0 in college surrounded by 6'9 power forward and 6'7 small forward and 7'1 center. 1988. Today's game is a 6'6 point guard and second guard 2 6'9 forwards and a 7'2 center. 2. The old run and gun pace of the 50s was due also do to the size of the players faster pace faster chase I forever thought the set shot was lazy but it was tactical in fourth quarter fatigue. I got benched for an entire game for set shooting I also got benched for shooting almost half court 3s back to back even thou they went in. Because if you in the paint why kick it out for 3 pointer settle for the 2. 3.what you didn't show was the violence of nba from 1950-1962 clipping, booting,knee in the leg foot stepping Jersey balling hand check trash talking fist fights. I think that this applies to everything, the way you learn things is the way you do things, if you bring a specialist at anything from 70 years ago, that specialist it's gonna look like he knows nothing or he's too basic, if you took that same guy but introduce him to the new style and knowledge, give it a couple of years to develop and settle, that specialist will still be at the level of today's specialists, because now he has the knowledge. If you bring a 50's player to today's game and explain to him what he can do on the court and show him how to shoot in the modern style, that player is going to be as good as current players are. That's part of the evolution of the game, you can't learn new things if you don't know the basic ones first, knowledge gets refined and you keep improving on what works best, like the Fostbury flop in high jump. If you think high jumpers before Fostbury were trash, well, you're wrong, they had worse knowledge and facilities than the ones we have today, so their conditions were trash, they were not trash. That's why i hate both extremes, the guys who say old players were trash and today's players are the best ever when they're allowed to palm, carry, scoop and travel, and the oldheads that hate on new players because they're not as physically tough and can't defend as well when the game is harder to defend due to the lack of rule enforcement.

The dribbling and what we call "handles" improving over time has more to do with officiating IMO. If refs still called it like the 60s, we would not have the ball handling we see today. Today it's so lax that I would say, most players can't go without traveling in most situations.

So basically the rules have changed to dumb down the game and create more scoring. Today's nba isn't real basketball and it's all about dunks, 3s and no defense.

That is why kobe is better than MJ. 1st illegal defense was out. 2nd most his peers and veteran players were not afraid of him, unlike MJ. Hence, those players can fully showcase their game as compared against MJ.

Bob Davies pretty much started the fast break, not the lakers. Sad how he was voted in the top 10 greatest players of the game at the 25th anniversary of the NBA and now is pretty much forgotten due to no footage of games being around. @hoopvision68 You're incorrect...the NBA and the BAA were not the same. The BAA merged with the NBL to create the NBA on August 3rd, 1949. The NBA took on the identity and history of the BAA. BAA was 3 years old and NBL was 12 years old at the time of their merging. BAA had the more popular cities as well as venues in addition to making more money though a younger league than the NBL.

This is why I don't even entertain someone when they put a player prior to the mid-late 70s in their top 10...those players are accomplished...but they aren't all time greats...they wouldn't make high school rosters in 2024
